Features

Everything the room holds, from the daily ten to the leagues your group chat keeps. Each entry says where to find it, and where to read more.

The daily ten

Each day EthnoGuessr deals ten groups, the same ten for everyone, and a new day begins at midnight UTC. For each group you study a male and a female composite and place one pin on the world map. The nearer the pin, the more points, up to 5,000 a round and 50,000 for a perfect day.

The rounds are archived as they are dealt. If the source of the daily is ever down, the game keeps playing from our own archive, and only the worldwide comparison waits for its return.

The plate

When you finish, Save image sets your whole day as a single atlas page: your total, a map with all ten regions, each round's face, distance and points, and how the day went worldwide. It is made to drop into the group chat as it is, and it carries ethnogvessr.com at its foot so anyone who sees it can find the game.

Post to X, Bluesky and Threads

From the results screen, one tap opens a post on X, Bluesky or Threads with your score, your standing worldwide and your share link already written out. These are plain links, so no social scripts load on the page and nobody follows you there.

Friends, head to head

Send a friend an invite link. Once you have paired, you see each other's daily scores and a running head-to-head record. A friend's score only appears after you have finished your own game, so nobody spoils anybody. Everything between friends is end-to-end encrypted, with keys only your devices hold.

Groups and leagues

A group is a private league for a group chat: one permanent link, and a leaderboard only its members can read. Every group runs a monthly season. Each day scores the share of that day's field you beat, and your best fifteen days count, so a missed evening or a hard round won't sink you. When a month closes, its champion is entered on the group's roll of honour.

An all-time Rating

Your Rating gathers every day you have played into one number: the share of each day's players worldwide that you beat, averaged, and held near a typical player until you have a week of days behind you. It is worked out on your device from the worldwide distribution, and nothing about you is uploaded to do it. Rankings sets it out beside your best day and your streaks, and you may choose to share that summary with friends and groups.

Among ethnogvessr players

Beside the worldwide picture you can see where you stand among ethnogvessr players alone: for the day on the results screen, and for your Rating and streak in Rankings. Both are built from anonymous counts. A finished game adds one to its score band, and once a week a device adds one to its Rating and streak bands under a random ID that changes every week. None of it says who.

What our server can and can't see

Streaks and the calendar

Your record, behind the people icon at the top left, keeps your current streak, your best streak and a five-week calendar of your scores, so a glance shows how the month has gone. It lives on your devices and asks for no sign-up.

Linked devices and a recovery key

Link your phone, laptop and home-screen app and they become one Anthropologus, with one history, one streak and one set of friends. With no accounts there is no password reset, so you can also make a recovery key and keep it in your vault with Save in 1Password. If you ever lose every device, ethnogvessr.com/restore brings everything back.

On your home screen

ethnogvessr installs as an app from Safari or Chrome and opens full screen, like anything else on your phone. A home-screen app also keeps your streak safe, because browsers may clear a site's data after a week away.

Privacy

There are no ads, no trackers, no cookies and no accounts. Your name and history stay on your devices, and our server keeps only sealed boxes it cannot open. The game is free, and it runs on hosting plans that stop rather than bill, so it can't cost anyone money.
